The Song Context
In Beckmesser’s box, let’live once more through the Song Context

    From the wavering tremolo of the piano, fragments of burning themes are sent forth, the sustained notes calling the voice towards the depths. From ‘mild und leise’ and throughout, high and low harmonics press in the heart of an inexorable timbre which pours forth in a fabulous legato-gesang the glacial sorrow of the heroine and the Bellinian souvenir of her all-consuming love in a crescendo of ‘surge-desire’ where Wagner torments the line as if he wanted to extract the soul from its tunic of flesh.
    Of this fight always renewed between the harmonic writing and the legato, where the cantabile preserve all its rights, one has to remember – following the desperate ‘klinget’ and the paroxysm of ‘in dem wogenden Schwall’, - the extraordinary rise of the B natural of ‘Atems’ which sets the voice free, enabling it to enter, piano, the immaterial sphere of another world surrounded by a nimbus of light , thus restoring to Isolt the contours of her ‘dulce’ everlastingness.
    One can only imagine the impact of this interpretation accompanied by the Berlin Philarmonic Orchestra conducted by Siegfried Wagner, on the 11th October 1926.

Le Concours de Chant des Isolde
Dans la loge de Beckmesser, revivons l’Epreuve de Chant

    Du frémissement en trémolo du piano se dégagent des fragments de thèmes brûlants, les notes tenues appelant la voix vers les profondeurs. Dès le “mild und leise” , harmoniques aigus et graves se pressent au coeur d’untimbre inexorable qui coule en un fabuleux legato-gesang la douleur glacée de l’héroïne et le souvenir bellinien de ses dévorantes amours dans un crescendo de houle-désir où Wagner tourmente la ligne de chant comme s’il voulait arracher l’âme à sa tunique de chair.
    De ce combat entre l’écriture harmonique et le legato toujours recommencé dans lequel le cantabile conserve tous ses droits, il faut retenir à la suie de “klinget” désespéré et du paroxysme de “in den wogenden Schwall” l’extraordinaire remontée du si (grave) de “Atems” qui libère la voix et lui permet d’entrer, nuance pianissimo, dans un en delà immatériel nimbé de lumière, restituant ainsi à Yseut, les contours de sa “dulce” pérennité.
    On ne peut qu’imaginer ce qu’eut donné cette interprétation accompagnée par le Philarmonique de Berlin du 11octobre 1926, dirigé par Siegfried Wagner.

Isolde im Wettstreit der Sängerinnen
Erleben wir noch einmal in der Loge Beckmessers den Sängerinnenwettstreit

    Aus dem erbenden Tremolo des Klaviers heben sich Fragmente brennender Motive ab, und die gehaltenen Noten rufen die Stimme in die Tiefe. Ab “mild und leise” drängen sich hohe und tiefe Harmoniken in der Unerbittlichkeit eines Timbre, dans in herrlichem legato den erstarrsten Schmerz der Heldin und die bellinische Erinnerung an ihre verzehrende Liebe dahinfliessen lässt mit jenem bebenden Verlangen, das der Bewegung des grossen Woge angeglichen ist, bei der Wagner die Gesangslinie so quält, als-wolle er die Stimme ihrem Zusammenhang und Isolde dem fleischlichen kleid entreissen.
    Von diesem Kampf zwischen Harmonik und legato-gesang – im Timbre – wo das cantabile zu seinem vollen Recht Kommt, ist nach dem verzweifelten “klinget” und dem Höhepunkt von “in dem wogenden…” der ausserordentliche Wiederaufstieg zum mittleren h besonders fest zuhalten. Die Stimme wird dadurch befreit und kann im piano in ein vom Stofflichen gelöstes, lichtumflutetes Diesseits gelangen, wobei Isolde die Silouette ihres “sussen” (dulce) immerwährenden Bestehens.
    Man kann sich nur ausmalen, wie diese interpretation, begleietet von der Berliner Philharmonikern, am 11.19.1926, under der Leitung von Siefried Wagner, gewirkt hätte.
